What is Aggrenox?

Aggrenox is a combination medication containing aspirin and dipyridamole which is used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have had blood clots or a “mini-stroke” (transient ischemic attack or TIA). Aspirin reduces the substances which cause pain, inflammation and fever while dipyridamole is used to keep platelets in your blood from forming blood clots.

• Swallow capsules whole without chewing, opening or breaking.

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of asthma, nasal polyps, stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, bleeding problems, heart problems, low blood pressure or myasthenia gravis.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Taking aspirin late during pregnancy can cause bleeding in the mother or baby.
• If you drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day.

You should also know:

• You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking Aggrenox as it can increase your risk of stomach bleeding.
• You should not use any other over-the-counter pain medications without asking your doctor or pharmacist.
• Aggrenox can make it easier to bleed even from minor injuries.
• If you need surgery, dental procedures or a heart stress test tell your doctor or dentist that you take Aggrenox.

Common side effects of Aggrenox include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Upset stomach or heartburn.
• Diarrhea, stomach pain or nausea.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Aggrenox:

• Signs of bleeding in the brain including severe headache, memory problems, confusion or fainting.
• New or worsening chest pain.
• Lightheadedness or the feeling that you might pass out.
• Symptoms of liver problems including itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools or a pain in your upper stomach.
• Hearing problems including a ringing in your ears.
• Symptoms of stomach bleeding such as stomach pain, severe heartburn, coughing up blood, vomit which looks like coffee grounds or bloody or tarry stools.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Aggrenox?

If you miss a dose of Aggrenox, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What else is Aggrenox called?

Aggrenox is also known as Asasantin SR internationally. Asasantin SR is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication. Generic Aggrenox is called dipyridamole + ASA.
