Aldara Cream is a prescription medication that is used to treat skin conditions including actinic keratosis, genital warts, and some forms of skin cancer. Aldara Cream contains the immune response modifier drug imiquimod and works by activating your immune system.

• Wash your hands and the affected skin area, and allow them to dry for at least ten minutes before applying Aldara Cream.
• Follow your doctor’s dosing directions carefully. This medication is often taken between two and five times a week.
• Do not apply this medication to skin that is burned, broken, or wounded.
• If you are using this medication on your genital or rectal area, avoid sexual activity while the medication is on your skin. This medication can weaken rubber birth control.
• Your doctor may need to check your condition regularly.

• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of skin problems, sunburn, autoimmune disorders, a weak immune system, or graft-versus-host disease.

• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• This medication should not be used in children younger than 12 years old.
• This medication can make you sunburn more easily. Avoid tanning beds. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen while outside.
• Do not have unprotected sex while using this medication.

Common side effects of Aldara Cream include but are not limited to:

• Signs of mild skin irritation such as itching, flaking, crusting, redness, hardening, or dryness to the application site.
• Color changes in the skin.
• Headaches or dizziness.
• Cold sores or fever blisters.
• Chest pain or back pain.
• Vaginal itching or discharge.
• Nausea or diarrhea.
• Loss of appetite.
• Cold symptoms including sneezing, sore throat, or stuffy nose.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of imiquimod:

• Severe swelling or urination problems.
• Flu symptoms.
• Signs of a skin reaction including severe burning, itching, oozing, or bleeding.
• Skin changes to the application site.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Aldara Cream?

If you miss a dose of Aldara Cream, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
