Aricept SR is a prescription medication that is used to improve the mental function of people that have Alzheimer’s disease. Aricept SR contains the enzyme blocker medication donepezil and works by restoring the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Aricept SR can be taken with or without food.
• Take Aricept SR at bedtime.
• Swallow this medication whole without chewing or crushing,
• While taking this medication, drink plenty of non-caffeinated liquids, unless directed otherwise by your doctor.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications
• Your medical history particularly of seizures, liver disease, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, asthma, breathing disorders, heart rhythm disorders, stomach ulcers, or urination problems.
• If you have problems swallowing tablets
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy
• If you are breast-feeding

• This medication may affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do so safely.

Common side effects of Aricept SR include but are not limited to:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Muscle cramps
• Stomach upset or diarrhea
• Feeling dizzy or weak
• Headaches
• Loss of appetite or weight loss
• Tiredness or sleeping problems

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of donepezil:

• Slow or abnormal heartbeats
• Seizures
• Severe dizziness or passing out
• New or worsening breathing problems
• Difficult urination
• Severe stomach pain
• Heartburn
• Signs of stomach bleeding including coughing up blood, bloody or tarry stools, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.
