Atacand is a blood pressure medication containing candesartan. Lowering blood pressure may reduce the risk of stroke, kidney problems or heart complications including heart attack. Candesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that works by relaxing blood vessels enabling blood to flow more easily. Atacand may also be prescribed to treat heart failure.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Atacand may be taken with or without food.
• Your blood pressure will need to be checked often while you are using Atacand.
• Continue taking candesartan even when you feel well. It may take up to six weeks to feel the full effect of this medication.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of kidney disease, liver disease, heart problems or dehydration.
• If you are on a low-salt diet.

You should also know:

• Atacand should not be used during pregnancy. Stop taking this medication immediately and contact your doctor if you become pregnant.
• If you have diabetes, do not use Atacand together with any medication which contains the blood pressure medicine aliskiren.
• You should not breast-feed while taking this medication.

Common side effects of Atacand include but are not limited to:

• Headache or dizziness.
• Back pain.
• Cold symptoms including sore throat, stuffy nose or sneezing.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Atacand:

• Lightheadedness or the feeling that you might pass out.
• Slow or fast heartbeat.
• Unusual weakness or muscle pain.
• High potassium level symptoms such as nausea, weakness, chest pain, tingling feeling, loss of movement or irregular heartbeat.
• Signs of kidney problems such as tiredness, shortness of breath, swelling in your feet or ankles or little or no urination.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Atacand?

If you miss a dose of Atacand, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

How long does it take Atacand to work?

It may take up to six weeks to feel the full effect of this medication. Continue taking candesartan even when you feel well.
