Betoptic S is a prescription medication that is used to treat conditions involving high pressure inside the eye such as open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Betoptic S contains the beta-blocker medication betaxolol and works to reduce pressure inside the eye by decreasing the amount of fluid produced.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Shake Betoptic S well before using it. Wash your hands and remove contact lenses. Wait at least fifteen minutes before putting contact lenses back in.
• Tip your head backward and use your finger to pull down your eyelid to create a pouch. Hold the eye dropper directly above your eye and look away. Squeeze out a drop into your eye.
• Tip your head forwards and close your eyes for 2-3 minutes. Use your fingers to stop the liquid from draining into your eye duct.
• If you need multiple drops of Betoptic S, wait at least five minutes between drops. Wait at least ten minutes before using any other eye medication.
• Do not touch the tip of the dropper or place it on any other surface to prevent contamination.
• Do not use Betoptic S if it has changed colors or has particles in it.
• Tell your doctor if you have an eye infection, eye injury or need eye surgery.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of heart conditions, heart failure, slow heartbeats, diabetes, blood circulation problems, peripheral vascular disease, muscle disorders, thyroid disorder, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), severe allergies or any other condition that requires a beta-blocker medication.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Common side effects of Betoptic S include but are not limited to:

• Feeling like there is something in your eye.
• Eye irritation.
• Increased light sensitivity.
• Itchy or watery eyes.
• Blurred vision.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of betaxolol.

• Shortness of breath while lying down.
• Chest pain.
• Coughing with foamy mucus.
• Muscle weakness in your arms or legs.
• Signs of bronchospasm such as trouble breathing, wheezing or chest tightness.
• Swelling or rapid weight gain.
• Drooping eyelids.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Betoptic S?

If you miss a dose of Betoptic S, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
