Danocrine is a prescription medication that is used to treat endometriosis and hereditary angioedema. Danocrine contains the drug danazol. Danazol works by decreasing the amount of hormones produced by the ovaries and by increasing the amount of proteins that the immune system produces.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• This medication is taken orally. Danocrine can be taken with or without food but should be taken the same way each time.
• When taking danazol to treat endometriosis, begin taking it during a menstrual period.
• Speak to your doctor if you become ill or have an infection, or if you have surgery. Your dosage may need to be changed.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of severe liver disease, heart problems, kidney disease, vaginal bleeding, porphyria, stroke, blood clots or cancer.

You should also know:

• This medication should not be taken during pregnancy Use effective birth control while using Danocrine.
• Do not breast-feed while taking Danocrine.
• Danocrine should not be taken by anyone younger than 18.

Common side effects of Danocrine include but are not limited to:

• Changes in menstrual periods.
• Unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting.
• Vaginal dryness or irritation.
• Decreased amount of semen released during sex.
• Sexual problems.
• Breast changes.
• Mood changes.
• Nervousness.
• Flushing.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of danazol:

• Acne or other skin problems.
• Increased hair growth or hair loss.
• Swelling or weight gain.
• Stomach pain.
• Loss of appetite.
• Dark urine or bloody or tarry stools.
• Jaundice.
• Vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
• Coughing with mucus.
• Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness.
• Signs of a blood clot including swelling or redness in the arm or leg, vision or speech problems, sudden numbness or weakness.
• Signs of increased pressure inside the skull including nausea, vision problems, severe headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, vision problems or a pain behind the eyes.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Danocrine?

If you miss a dose of Danocrine, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Speak to your doctor if you miss more than two doses in a row.

What is the strength of Danocrine?

Both Danocrine and the generic alternative danazol are available in strengths of 50mg, 100mg and 200mg.
