Famvir is a prescription medication that is used to treat cold sores, shingles, genital herpes and other conditions that have been caused by the herpes virus. Famvir is an antiviral drug that contains famciclovir. Famciclovir works by slowing down the growth and spread of the herpes virus. This medication does not cure herpes but can lessen the symptoms.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Famvir can be taken with or without food.
• Take Famvir as soon as possible once you notice the first appearance of symptoms including blisters, tingling or burning.
• Taking more Famvir than has been prescribed will not make the medication more effective or make it work quicker.
• Wear loose clothing to prevent lesions from irritating. Keep lesions clean and dry.
• Use Famvir for the full amount of time it was prescribed, even if your symptoms improve before then.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of kidney disease, liver disease, galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Herpes can be passed to your baby if you have a genital lesion during childbirth.
• If you are breast-feeding.

• Famvir should not be used by anyone younger than 18.

Common side effects of Famvir include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Nausea.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of famciclovir.

• Confusion.
• Symptoms of a kidney problem such as shortness of breath, tiredness, little or no urination or swelling in your feet or ankles.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Famvir?

If you miss a dose of Famvir, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of Famvir?

Famvir and the generic alternative famciclovir are both available in 250mg and 500mg strengths. Only the brand name Famvir is available at 125mg.
