Feldene is a prescription medication that is used to treat arthritis and to reduce joint stiffness, pain and swelling caused by arthritis. Feldene is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that contains piroxicam. Piroxicam works by blocking your body from producing substances that cause inflammation.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Piroxicam can be taken with or without food. Take it with food if the medication causes an upset stomach.
• Take Feldene with a full glass of water.
• Do not take more of this medication or more frequently than you have been directed by your doctor.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of heart failure, heart attack, kidney problems, gastrointestinal bleeding or asthma.
• If you have ever had an allergic reaction to using an NSAID.
• If you are having difficulty becoming pregnant or if you have had your fertility checked.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. This medication should not be taken during the third trimester of pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.
• If you smoke or drink alcohol.

You should also know:

• All of your doctors and dentists should be aware that you use piroxicam.
• This medication may cause you to bleed more easily. Take care to avoid injury or bleeding.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication.

Common side effects of Feldene include but are not limited to:

• Headaches.
• Dizziness.
• Diarrhea, upset stomach or stomach pain.
• Constipation.
• Gas.
• Vomiting.
• Feeling less hungry.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of piroxicam.

• Chest pain or pressure.
• Flu-like symptoms.
• Shortness of breath.
• Swelling in the arms or legs.
• Changes in your eyesight.
• Ringing in the ears.
• Feeling very weak or tired.
• Signs of a stroke such as drooping on one side of the face, weakness on one side of the body, blurred eyesight, balance changes, speaking problems or trouble thinking.
• Signs of high blood pressure such as changes in your eyesight, severe headache, passing out or dizziness.
• Signs of a kidney problem including bloody urine, rapid weight gain, difficulty passing urine or a change to the quantity of urine.
• Signs of high potassium levels including confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, feeling weak or dizzy, shortness of breath, a heartbeat that doesn’t feel normal, feeling like passing out, numbness or tingling.
• Signs of bleeding including coughing up blood, bloody urine, bleeding in the gums, unusual vaginal bleeding, persistent bleeding, unusual bruising, vomit that looks like coffee grounds or stools that are red, black or tarry.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Feldene?

If you miss a dose of Feldene, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of piroxicam?

Both piroxicam and the brand name Feldene are available in strengths of 10mg and 20mg.
