Hydroquinone cream is a prescription medication that is used to lighten areas of darkened skin including age spots, melasma, chloasma and freckles. Hydroquinone cream works by decreasing the formation of the pigment in the skin that can give it a brown color.

• Hydroquinone cream is typically applied twice a day, in the morning and at bedtime.
• This medication should only be applied to the skin. Do not get hydroquinone cream inside your nose or mouth or on your lips.
• Do not apply hydroquinone cream to skin that is irritated, sunburned, dry, chapped or windburned or to open wounds.
• Wash your hands before and after using this medication unless you are using it to treat your hands.
• Avoid getting this mediation on skin around the affected area.
• Before using this medication, apply a small amount of cream to a healthy area of skin and check the area 24 hours later. Check if there is any reaction other than minor redness.
• Speak to your doctor if your symptoms have not improved after two months of regular use.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of liver disease, kidney disease or asthma.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Common side effects of hydroquinone cream include but are not limited to:

• Mild irritation.
• Mild burning, stinging, itching or redness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of hydroquinone cream.

• Severe redness, stinging or burning.
• Severe skin bleeding, cracking or dryness.
• Blisters.
• Skin oozing.
• Blue or black discoloration of the skin.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of hydroquinone cream?

If you miss a dose of hydroquinone cream, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
