Micardis HCT is a prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure. Micardis HCT is a combination medication that contains the angiotensin II receptor antagonist telmisartan and the thiazide diuretic (water pill) hydrochlorothiazide. Micardis HCT works by preventing blood vessels from narrowing and stopping your body from absorbing too much salt.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Micardis HCT can be taken with or without food.
• Continue taking this medication even when you feel well.
• Your blood pressure may need to be checked regularly while taking Micardis HCT.
• It can take up to four weeks to feel the full benefits of this medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of kidney disease, liver disease, lupus, diabetes, glaucoma, asthma, if you are unable to urinate or low or high levels of magnesium or potassium in the blood.

You should also know:

• Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects of this medication.
• Micardis HCT should not be taken during pregnancy. Stop taking this medication and contact your doctor if you become pregnant.
• Do not breast-feed while taking Micardis HCT.
• Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication to avoid dehydration.
• Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements unless directed by your doctor.

Common side effects of Micardis HCT include but are not limited to:

• Nausea or diarrhea.
• Cold or flu symptoms.
• Back pain.
• Dizziness.
• Tiredness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Micardis HCT:

• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Unusual weight gain or swelling in the hands and feet.
• Jaundice.
• Eye pain or vision problems.
• Easy bruising or unusual bleeding.
• Signs of an electrolyte imbalance such as fast heartbeats, little or no urine, dry mouth, increased thirst, confusion, drowsiness, restlessness, vomiting, lack of energy, muscle pain or weakness, or seizures.
• Signs of the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue such as muscle pain, tenderness, fever, dark-colored urine, tiredness, or weakness.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Micardis HCT?

If you miss a dose of Micardis HCT, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What else is Micardis HCT called?

Micardis HCT is also known as Micardis Plus internationally. Micardis Plus is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication.
