Namenda contains memantine and is used to treat dementia-related to Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine does not cure Alzheimer’s disease but it may improve awareness, memory and the ability to perform daily functions. Namenda blocks the action of the natural substance glutamate in the brain which is linked to the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

• Namenda may be taken with or without food.
• Namenda capsules should be swallowed whole without chewing, breaking or opening.
• If you struggle to swallow this medication whole, you may open the capsule and sprinkle the medication into a spoonful of applesauce and swallow without chewing.
• This medication is most effective when it is used regularly. Refill your prescription before you run out of medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of epilepsy or other seizure disorders, liver disease, kidney problems or bladder infections or urinary tract infections or other urination problems.
• If you have made any recent dietary changes.
• If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast-feeding.

• Memantine may affect your thinking or reactions. Avoid driving or anything else that requires your full attention until it can be done safely.

Common side effects of Namenda include but are not limited to:

• Diarrhea.
• Headaches or dizziness.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of Namenda:

• Unusual mood or behavior changes.
• Seizures.
• Severe headaches or a pounding in your neck or ears.
• Blurred vision.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Namenda?

If you miss a dose of Namenda, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Contact your doctor if you miss several doses in a row.

What else is Namenda called?

Namenda is also known as Ebixa internationally. Ebixa is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication. Generic Namenda is called memantine.
