Nabumetone is a prescription medication that is used to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Nabumetone is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and works by reducing the amount of hormones in the body that cause inflammation.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Nabumetone can be taken with or without food.
• Do not take this medication in a higher dosage or for longer than prescribed.
• You may need regular medical checks while taking this medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications
• Your medical history particularly of heart disease, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, blood clots, kidney disease, liver disease, stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, asthma, or fluid retention
• If you have heart bypass surgery scheduled
• If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction or asthma attack after taking an NSAID such as aspirin
• If you smoke
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. This medication can harm an unborn baby when taken during the last three months of pregnancy

You should also know:

• This medication can increase your risk of heart attack stroke, stomach bleeding, or intestinal bleeding. Speak to your doctor for more information.
• Nabumetone should not be taken by anyone younger than 18.
• Do not breast-feed while taking this medication.
• Do not smoke or drink alcohol while taking this medication as they can increase your risk of stomach bleeding.
• Do not take aspirin while taking Nabumetone. Speak to your doctor before taking any prescription or over the counter medication containing aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen.
• This medication may make you more likely to sunburn. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen while outside.

Common side effects of nabumetone include but are not limited to:

• Headaches
• Stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, or gas
• Nausea
• Constipation
• Ringing in the ears
• Dizziness
• Swelling in the hands or feet
• Itching

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of nabumetone:

• Swelling or rapid weight gain
• Any skin rash
• Shortness of breath, even with mild exertion
• Signs of a severe skin reaction including fever, sore throat, skin pain, burning eyes or a red or purple rash that peels and blisters
• Signs of a liver problem including nausea, jaundice, dark urine, clay-colored stools, tiredness, itching, upper stomach pain, flu symptoms or loss of appetite
• Signs of a kidney problem such as swelling in the feet or ankles, tiredness, shortness of breath or urination that is painful, difficult or decreased in frequency or quantity
• Signs of a heart attack or stroke including slurred speech, shortness of breath, sudden numbness, or weakness to one side of the body or chest pain that spreads to your jaw or shoulder
• Signs of stomach bleeding including coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds or bloody or tarry stools
• Signs of anemia including shortness of breath, pale skin, cold hands or feet, tiredness or feeling lightheaded
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat

What should I do if I miss a dose of nabumetone?

If you miss a dose of nabumetone, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
