Renvela is a prescription medication that is used to prevent hypocalcemia caused by elevated levels of phosphorus and to control the levels of phosphorus in patients with chronic kidney disease that are on dialysis. Renvela contains the phosphate binder medication sevelamer.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Renvela should be taken with meals
• Do not take any other medications one hour before or three hours after taking Renvela.
• Renvela may be prescribed as part of a treatment program that also includes a special diet. Make sure you are aware of the foods you should eat and avoid.
• You may need regular blood tests while taking this medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, especially heart rhythm medications, seizure medications or calcium supplements
• Your medical history particularly of bowel obstructions, intestinal blockage, severe constipation, slow digestion, stomach disorders or intestinal disorders
• If you have recently had intestinal or stomach surgery
• If you have problems swallowing
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy
• If you are breast-feeding

Common side effects of Renvela include but are not limited to:

• Nausea or vomiting.
• Upset stomach, stomach pain, bloating, or gas.
• Diarrhea or constipation.
• Tiredness.
• Loss of appetite.
• Joint pain.
• Itching.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of sevelamer:

• Stomach pain with severe constipation.
• Constipation that worsens or does not improve.
• Swallowing problems or choking.
• Black, bloody, or tarry stools.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Renvela?

If you miss a dose of Renvela, you should take it with food as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Renvela and the generic alternative sevelamer carbonate are available in strengths of 800mg.
