Rilutek is a prescription medication that is used to treat the nerve disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease). Rilutek contains riluzole and works by protecting the nerves in the brain and spinal cord from the natural substance glutamate. Rilutek can help to slow down the worsening of ALS but is not a cure.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Take Rilutek on an empty stomach, either one hour before or two hours after a meal.
• Rilutek is typically taken every 12 hours.
• This medication is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take Rilutek at the same time every day.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition worsens.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications
• Your medical history particularly of liver disease, kidney disease, or raised liver enzymes
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy
• If you are breast-feeding
• If you smoke, start smoking or stop smoking. Smoking can affect the amount of this drug in your blood.

You should also know:

• Rilutek may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive or use machinery until it can be done safely.

Common side effects of Rilutek include but are not limited to:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea or stomach pain
• Loss of appetite
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Tiredness or drowsiness
• Numbness or tingling around the mouth

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of riluzole.

• Persistent nausea or vomiting
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain
• Dark urine
• Jaundice
• Signs of infection including fever, chills, persistent sore throat, or a cough
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat

What should I do if I miss a dose of Rilutek?

If you miss a dose of Rilutek, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
