What is Spiriva?

Spiriva is an inhaled drug used to prevent bronchospasm in patients with COPD. The active ingredient, tiotropium, is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and allows you to breathe easier. Spiriva is a maintenance drug that helps prevent COPD symptoms, and should not be used in the event of an attack.

Spiriva is typically used once daily to improve COPD symptoms and prevent flare-ups. This dry powder medication comes in capsule form, and must be inserted into the HandiHaler to use. Do not take the capsules by mouth. Spiriva should only be inhaled through the mouth. Spiriva is not a rescue medication and does not work fast enough to treat a COPD flare up. Always follow your doctor’s directions and all instructions included with Spiriva.

Before taking Spiriva, tell your doctor about any other medications you’re taking and if you have/are:

• Kidney disease
• Glaucoma
• Difficulty urinating
• Enlarged prostate
• Milk allergies
• Pregnant or breastfeeding

Side effects of Spiriva include:

How long does Spiriva take to work?

Spiriva starts working in your airways from the first dose, but it may take up to two weeks for you to notice significant improvement. Continue using Spiriva unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Is it safe to take Spiriva and smoke?

Yes. Although quitting smoking will help improve your COPD symptoms, you don’t have to quit in order to use this drug.  

Can I stop taking Spiriva if I feel better?

Spiriva is a long-term medication designed to treat a chronic condition (COPD). You should continue taking it daily unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
