Surmontil is a prescription medication that is used to treat depression symptoms. Surmontil contains the tricyclic antidepressant trimipramine. Trimipramine works by affecting unbalanced chemicals in the brain of patients.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Surmontil can be taken with or without food.
• If you only take this medication once a day, then take it at bedtime.
• Surmontil is most effective when taken regularly.
• Do not stop taking this medication suddenly.
• It may take up to four weeks of using this medication before your symptoms improve.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About any allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of heart attack, heart disease, liver disease, stroke, seizures, diabetes, glaucoma, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychosis, mental illness, overactive thyroid, diabetes, or urination problems.

• Surmontil should not be used by anyone younger than 18.
• Some people may have suicidal thoughts when first taking an antidepressant. Stay alert to mood and symptom changes.
• Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects of this medication.
• Surmontil can affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do so safely.
• This medication may cause you to sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen while outdoors.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication.

Common side effects of Surmontil include but are not limited to:

• Dizziness
• Drowsiness or sleeping problems
• Nausea or vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Blurred vision
• Balance or coordination problems
• Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
• Dry mouth
• Weight changes
• Breast swelling in both men and women

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of trimipramine:

• New or worsening symptoms including mood changes, behavior changes, sleeping problems, depression, thoughts of suicide or self-harm, panic attacks, anxiety, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, hostility, agitation, irritability, aggressiveness, or restlessness.
• New or worsening chest pain, fluttering in the chest or pounding heartbeat.
• Unusual thoughts or behaviors or confusion.
• Restless muscle movements in the eyes, jaw, neck, or tongue.
• Seizures.
• Easy bruising or unusual bleeding.
• Eye pain or swelling or vision changes including blurred vision, tunnel vision, or seeing halos around lights.
• Feeling lightheaded or like you might pass out.
• Painful or difficult urination.
• Sudden weakness or an ill feeling including fever, chills, or sore throat.
• Signs of high serotonin levels including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, fainting, loss of coordination, hallucinations, or overactive reflexes.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Surmontil?

If you miss a dose of Surmontil, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of Surmontil?

Surmontil and the generic alternative trimipramine are available in strengths of 10mg, 25mg, and 50mg.
