Tazorac Gel is a prescription medication that is used to treat psoriasis and acne. Tazorac Gel contains a retinoid related to vitamin A called tazarotene. Tazarotene works by affecting skin cell growth and helping the skin to renew itself quicker. Tazorac Gel can improve your skin texture and appearance.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Tazorac Gel should only be applied to the skin. Do not apply this gel to skin that is irritated, sunburned, windburned or chapped or to open wounds. Rinse off if this medication gets on any unaffected skin areas.
• Women using tazarotene should begin this medication during a menstrual period.
• Wash and dry your hands before applying this medication. Wash your hands after using, unless the medication is treating your hands.
• Apply a thin layer of medication to the skin and rub it in gently.
• If Tazorac Gel gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, vagina or rectum then rinse thoroughly with water.
• Do not cover the affected area with a bandage or similar.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of eczema, sunburn, skin conditions, or skin cancer.
• If you are breastfeeding. It may not be safe to use this medication.
• If you work outdoors.

You should also know:

• Tazorac Gel must not be used during pregnancy as it can harm a baby or cause birth defects. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication.
• Tazorac Gel is not approved for anyone younger than 12.
• Tazorac Gel may make your skin more sensitive to extreme weather including cold and wind. Use a moisturizing cream if needed and cover up with clothing when outdoors.

Common side effects of Tazorac Gel include but are not limited to:

• Itching or irritation where applied to the skin.
• Red, peeling, dry, scaly, or burning skin.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of tazarotene:

• Skin that peels or blisters.
• Severe discomfort or redness.
• Severe skin irritation including severe itching, stinging, pain, peeling, burning, flaking, or dryness where applied.
• Signs of skin infection including swelling, warmth, or oozing.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Tazorac Gel?

If you miss a dose of Tazorac Gel, you should apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
