Timoptic XE is a prescription medication that is used to treat conditions that involve high pressure inside the eye such as open-angle glaucoma. Timoptic XE contains the beta-blocker medication timolol and works by reducing pressure inside the eye.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Wash your hands and remove contact lenses before using Timoptic XE. Wait at least 15 minutes before replacing contact lenses.
• Tip your head backward and use your finger to pull down your lower eyelid. Hold the eyedropper directly above the eye, look away and squeeze out a single drop. Keep your eyes closed for 2-3 minutes and press your finger to the tear duct to prevent liquid from draining away.
• If you need more than one drop of Timoptic XE, wait at least 5 minutes between drops. Wait at least 10 minutes before using any other eye medication.
• Do not touch the tip of the eyedropper to prevent contamination.
• Do not stop using Timoptic XE suddenly or without speaking to a doctor.

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), breathing problems, heart conditions, heart failure, slow heart-beat, circulation problems, diabetes, glaucoma, thyroid disorder or muscle disorders.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

You should also know:

• Do not breast-feed while taking Timoptic XE.
• This medication may cause blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery until you can do so safely.

Common side effects of Timoptic XE include but are not limited to:

• Dry eyes.
• Eye itching, burning, or stinging.
• Feeling like there is something in the eye.
• Red or puffy eyelids.
• Headaches.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of timolol maleate:

• Severe eye stinging or burning.
• Slow heartbeats.
• Breathing difficulties, wheezing, or chest pain.
• Eye pain.
• Unusual thoughts or behavior including confusion, depression, or hallucinations.
• Muscle weakness.
• Cold or numb hands and feet.
• Signs of an eye infection including blurred vision, tunnel vision, or halos around lights.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Timoptic XE?

If you miss a dose of Timoptic XE, you should use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What else is Timoptic XE called?

Timoptic XE is also known as Timoptol LA internationally. Timoptol LA is the same brand name medication with a different name internationally and is not a generic alternative medication. Generic Timoptic XE is called timolol maleate-EX gel.
