Zanaflex is a prescription medication that is used to treat multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and other conditions that involve spasticity. Zanaflex contains tizanidine and works by temporarily relaxing muscle tone and blocking nerve impulses that are sent through to the brain.

Make sure to always read the patient information and instructions before using this medication. Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Zanaflex can be taken with or without food but should be taken in the same way each time.
• Do not change between methods of taking Zanaflex, or between Zanaflex tablets and capsules.
• Zanaflex is a quick-acting medication. You should notice the benefits 1-3 hours after taking Zanaflex.
• Do not take more than 36mg of this medication with a 24-hour period.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of kidney disease, liver disease, high blood pressure or low blood pressure.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

You should also know:

• You should not take more than 36mg of Zanaflex in a 24 hour period.
• Other medications may add to the sleepiness that tizanidine causes.

Common side effects of Zanaflex include but are not limited to:

• Drowsiness.
• Flu-like symptoms.
• Urination problems.
• Vomiting or constipation.
• Uncontrolled muscle movements.
• Runny nose or sore throat.
• Abnormal liver function tests.
• Nervousness.
• Dizziness or weakness.
• Blurred vision.
• Dry mouth.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of tizanidine.

• Painful or burning urination.
• Weak or shallow breathing.
• Confusion or hallucinations.
• Jaundice.
• Feeling light-headed or like you might pass out.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Zanaflex?

If you miss a dose of Zanaflex, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What is the strength of Zanaflex?

Both Zanaflex and the generic alternative tizanidine are available in strengths of 2mg and 4mg.
