Zemplar is a prescription medication that is used to treat hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease and on dialysis. Zemplar contains paricalcitol and is a synthetic form of vitamin D. Zemplar works by reducing the levels of the parathyroid hormone and helping your body to absorb calcium and phosphorus.

• Zemplar should be taken orally and can be taken with or without food.
• This medication is typically taken every other day, or three days a week.
• You may need regular blood checks while taking paricalcitol.
• Your doctor may direct you to follow a special diet while taking this medication.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• About your drug and other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history particularly of liver disease, high blood pressure or an electrolyte imbalance.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you can take antacids with this medication.

You should also know:

• If you are breast-feeding while taking paricalcitol you should watch for signs of hypercalcemia in the nursing infant. Symptoms include seizures, feeding problems, constipation and vomiting.
• Avoid grapefruit, grapefruit products, calcium supplements and Vitamin D supplements while taking Zemplar.

Common side effects of Zemplar include but are not limited to:

• Nausea or vomiting.
• Feeling dizzy or a spinning sensation.
• Joint pain.
• Runny nose.
• Swelling in your hands or feet.

Get medical help if you have any of the following side effects of paricalcitol.

• Fast, pounding or slow heartbeats.
• Seizures.
• Fever.
• Breathing problems.
• Flu symptoms.
• Mouth or throat ulcers.
• New or worsening cough.
• Signs of a high calcium level including increased thirst or urination, confusion, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, tiredness, constipation or loss of appetite.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Zemplar?

If you miss a dose of Zemplar, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Zemplar is available in strengths of 1mcg, 2mcg and 4mcg.
