Zomig is a prescription drug used to treat migraine headaches. It works by constricting blood vessels around the brain and reducing bodily triggers of migraine symptoms like pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Zomig is meant to treat migraines that have already begun, and won’t prevent one from happening. This drug does not treat regular tension headaches, and should only be used to treat recurring migraine headaches.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions and use Zomig exactly as prescribed.

• Take as soon as you notice migraine symptoms.
• Zomig tablets can be swallowed whole with a full glass of water.
• If symptoms persist, take a second tablet 2 hours after the first.
• Don’t take more than 10mg in a 24 hour period.

Do not take Zomig within 24 hours of another migraine medication.

Do not take if you’ve used an MAOI drug in the past 14 days.

Before taking Zomig, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:

• Stroke, or any heart disease or disorder
• High blood pressure or circulation problems
• Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
• Different or unusual headaches
• Seizures
• Liver or kidney disease

Common side effects of Zomig include:

• Dry mouth, upset stomach
• Drowsiness
• Flushing, warmth, redness
• Pressure or heavy feeling in the body

Contact your doctor if you experience these more serious side effects:

• Heart attack symptoms – spreading chest pain or pressure, nausea, sweating
• High serotonin levels – hallucinations, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fainting, loss of coordination, agitation
• Dizziness or pounding heartbeats
• Severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea
• Tightness in jaw, throat, neck, chest

Will Zomig treat other kinds of pain?

No. It specifically acts to reduce the causes of migraine headaches, and shouldn’t be used to treat other types of pain or a regular tension headache.
